We enjoy traveling and exploring different types of food cultures. We have just completed the west coast road trip which have taken us from Los Angeles to Seattle making stops at San Francisco and Portland. Both S.F. and Portland seemed to have very interesting food pallets. We especially enjoyed the diner style meal at Canteen in S.F. on the first night (thank you so much for your recommendation, Penelope). This is how it works at this very small diner with several counter seats and a few tables.
1. The menu changes every week (they are on week 167 this week)
2. The best seat of the house is at the counter watching 36-year-old chef Dennis Leary work his magic
3. It's probably safe to say that you definitely need to make reservations
4. They only take reservations for 6:30pm, 7:30pm and 9:15pm spots. The restaurant runs like a well oiled machine!
5. The waitless will remember you by first name.
6. Food is more than delicious and very reasonable. (and dessert too).
We were so happy to see a successful restaurant who is challenging a status quo of the "traditional restaurant culture" by being small while providing a quality service. I'm noticing the adgileness and the strength that smaller businesses bring to the table when economy slows down. Who knows... maybe these smaller players will get through the tough time and show us a model that works both in a good time and bad time.
